Super Diner Gift Cards
This week I designed gift cards for the Super Diner brand. Continuing to use the Behance design challenge prompts, I nearly have everything I need to start a real Diner. Let’s see what we got ourselves into today.
Using the motif set up in previous challenges, I brought in the logo to get a sense of where to place information on the 3.375 X 2.125 card. It’s not a lot of space to work with. I wanted to create a playful and eye catching illustration for the card. I thought of a stack of pancakes, but felt that might get too detailed for such a small card. After thinking of different diner foods, I decided on bacon.
Looking at reference pictures of bacon, I tried a few different illustrations. My first attempt was too 3d with wavy shadows and highlights. It clashed with the branding already established. I simplified the shadows, and got rid of the line work. The bacon now looked like it fit in the Super Diner world. Keeping with the theme, I decided to call the gift card bacon bucks, and used the same font as the logo. I made sure to keep all the elements within the printing guidelines to make sure nothing gets cut off. I also made sure to keep enough space around each element so that they didn’t feel cluttered on the small card.
Lastly I learned that you can set what level you draw on in Illustrator by clicking on the small icon under the color options in the tool panel. That way you can drag large color blocks under the work you have already done, or anything for that matter. In this way, you can skip having to figure out what level something is in your project. Neat!
In sharing my gift card with others, I got positive feedback. Almost everyone was hungry after they saw my bacon illustration. Though, my vegetarian friends wanted nothing to do with it. That’s something to keep in mind when finding your target audience.
